E6.2 p4: There's no going back

Darkness seemed to spread out all around her. Chloe found that it was suddenly very hard to think. Her head was spinning, what had she been doing again? Right, there was a Pokemon… someone hurt… she had to help… When she looked at the creature again, it was much bigger than it had previously seemed. Chloe felt her heart starting race when she recognized who it was.

“M… mother?”

The Meganium lifted her head and stared straight at Chloe, but didn’t say anything. She was covered in wounds, and Chloe had no idea what would’ve caused them. “Mother, how… What are you doing here? You have to get treated…” Chloe began as she approached her mother. Then she noticed that there was something behind her mother. She moved closer, trying to see… And then it came to her.

No, it can’t be.

Chloe backed off a few steps in panic. It couldn’t be, it had been a long time ago…

“It’s all over”, her mother finally spoke up. Her eyes looked like black pools full of hopelessness. “There's no going back. There’s nothing left when he’s gone.”

“N-no!” Chloe found herself saying. “We… we still…”

She lost the words she was about to say. She felt like she had been trying to find those words for a long time, but had never been able to say them out loud. But this time... this couldn’t be real, it wasn’t possible… Her panic was getting the hold of her. This had to be one of the tricks of the forest, it had to be.

Suddenly she saw the darkness open up behind her, and could see a familiar Mareep at the center of the light. “Chloe”, she yelled. “Come here!”

Chloe felt the panic subside in her a little. Myra was still there. It would be okay. She turned and left her mother behind. She isn’t real, she told herself. I’m not abandoning her. But as she moved towards Myra, her steps were heavy with guilt.
